Betting Line Trends
As the Kansas City Chiefs and San Francisco 49ers prepare for Sunday’s Super Bowl LIV matchup, the sports betting world is starting to heat up and placing bets on the 2020 Super Bowl odds.
I don’t recall a time where I was so undecided over who I thought would win the game. A snapshot into my head this week sounds something like this: “It’s the 49ers!” “No, the Chiefs!” “Defense wins championships, go 49ers!” “Have you seen Mahomes play? Chiefs all day!” “Andy Reid doesn’t know how to win the big one. Go 49ers.” One of my personalities will eventually win this battle.

Many I’ve spoken with seem to be having the same internal battles around the 2020 Super Bowl odds. So, to no surprise in a game seemingly causing most to go back-and-forth on picking an outright winner, we’re seeing some betting trends representing a similar point of view. In fact, a solid percentage of sports bettors are taking a cash-out betting approach, showing the lack of certainty on betting either side.
Regardless, the volume of bets on the 2020 Super Bowl across the United States will be huge.
“For this being the first Super Bowl where sports betting is legal in the US, it’s incredibly exciting to see both the volume of bets BetMGM is receiving as well as the dollar amount,” Elisa Richardson, spokeswoman for BetMGM shared with SportsbookWire. “It speaks directly to how big the opportunity for sports betting in the US really is.”

NBA Games & Records
The NBA Matchups are an essential betting tool for the novice or professional and it has so many features to follow. The NBA regular season covers over six months and it’s rare to see the league take a day off, so the Matchups will always have games available to wager on. The NBA Matchups lists all the NBA in order of Rotation, which is controlled the sportsbooks. Every matchup has a designated Home and Away team and both are given a rotation number. The games are show the Time as well, which is Eastern Standard Time Zone (ET) on this matchup page.
Understanding the Records
The NBA record section provides a quick look at the production of wins and losses for each team that is playing on the current day.
(Overall Record)
(Away or Home Record)
The Win-Loss is broken up by overall record and either the away or home record, depending on who is the host or the visitor.
NBA Streaks and slumps take place all the time and it’s always smart to ride the hot hand and fade the cold one. The Streak feature measured by Wins (W) and Losses (L). If a team wins five straight games, the Streak would read W-5. And if a club is mired in a seven-game losing skid, then you would see L-7 in the Streak column.
Understanding the Spread
ATS is an abbreviation for Against the Spread, which measures the profitability of an NBA team for bettors. NBA does offer money-line wagers but point-spread bets are more popular at the sportsbooks, similar to American football. Even if a team wins a game, the more important factor is covering the spread and those that do will have a much better ATS record. Even a team has a losing overall straight up record, it could be very competitive in games and stay within the oddsmakers’ expectations. That’s where the value is and a good ATS record on the hardwood usually parallels with a good team on the court.
The NBA Matchups section shows the Line, both the Open and Current numbers by the oddsmakers. For more informed bettors who like extra action, the matchups page shows both 1st Half and 2nd Half betting odds as well. Those wagers are based on the first 24 minutes of the NBA game or the final two quarters minutes plus any additional overtime.

Betting Line Trends
The VegasInsider.com NBA Matchups show Betting Trends from sportsbooks and they focus on what users are playing.
The Betting Trend Section receives percentages on three categories.
- Side (Point-Spread Bets)
- Money (Money-Line Bets)
- O/U (Total Bets)
The three betting trends are fairly simple to follow and they’re more volatile as tip-off of a game approaches.
The Side percentage is for the point-spread while the Money is for money-line wagers and that field usually skews heavily to favorites since not many bettors expect huge upsets, especially when the point-spread is high. The O/U is the total and the Over is always listed on top of the Under in the last Betting Trend column. Most bettors lean to favorites and overs and keep in mind that it’s not uncommon to see 100% to 0% listed for a particular matchup, especially after the betting line is just made available. These trends fluctuate based on the action and until the volume rises, that’s a common occurrence.
NBA Matchup History
What’s great about the Matchups is that VegasInsider.com shows all the data from previous games throughout the preseason, regular season and playoffs. Plus, the NBA Matchups show history on ATS results. When a game has officially ended, the winning team will have a red check («) shown next to their name. That’s just for the straight up win, which applies to money-line wagers. To figure out who cashed tickets on the NBA point-spread, you’ll turn your attention to the ATS column.
The ATS column shows which team earned the Cover, plus it posts the Over or Under result as well. The Cover feature shows how many points a team covered by and the higher the number, the more lopsided the win was. The Total result (Over-Under) shows the combined points scored in the game while the Cover result shows how many points the team exceeded the spread by.

Along with the ATS history on the NBA Matchups, you can also view Line Movements and Betting Trend movements for each game. Plus, you can get a quick Recap as well.
