Massachusetts Indian Casinos

Massachusetts has two American Indian tribes seeking either federal approval or state licensing to build a casino on their lands.

WAMPANOAG TRIBE OF GAY HEAD (Aquinnah)
Aquinnah Cliffs Casino on Martha's Vineyard
1 Black Brook Road
Aquinnah, MA 02535-1546

The Aquinnah tribe will build a Class II casino on tribal land on Martha's Vineyard after the U.S, Supreme Court threw out a state lawsuit to block it.

Class II gaming is defined as gambling played exclusively against other players and not the house. Examples are electronic gaming machines, bingo, poker, keno, pull-tabs, punchboards, and other 'non-banked' card games.

The Massachusetts Gaming Commission (MGC) has licensed one slots parlor and two regional casino resorts. A decision for a fourth casino in Brockton is pending.

PLAINRIDGE PARK CASINO - OPEN NOW
301 Washington St.
Plainville, MA 02762
(508) 643-2500

The Massachusetts Gaming Commission awarded the single slots-parlor license to Penn National Gaming on February 28, 2014. On March 14, 2014 the company broke ground on construction next to the Plainridge Racecourse in Plainridge, MA.

MGM SPRINGFIELD - OPEN NOW
441 Main Street
Springfield, MA 01103
413-735-3000

MGM Springfield is a $960 million resort casino in Springfield, Massachusetts that encompasses three downtown city blocks. The total resort is 500,000 square feet of casino gaming, dining, entertainment, hotel, residential and retail facilities. The grand opening was celebrated August 24, 2018.

ENCORE BOSTON HARBOR (info) - OPENING JUNE 23, 2019
1 Horizon Way
Everett, MA 02149

Wynn LLC has been licensed to build a $1.6 billion five-star resort and casino at Everett near Boston. The Massachusetts Gaming Commission approved Wynn's application over proposals from Mohegan Sun and Suffolk Downs.

BROCKTON CASINO - REJECTED 4.28.2016
The Massachusetts Gaming Commission can issue one more casino license for the southeastern part of the state. Mass Gaming & Entertainment had proposed a $650 million casino in Brockton about 17 miles north of Taunton, however the Gaming Commission decided in April 2016 to reject their application. The 4-1 vote against the Brockton casino did not rule out approval of a future commercial casino in the region.

A gaming compact between the state and the Mashpee Wampanoag requires the tribe to pay the state 17 percent of its gambling revenues. Commercial casinos pay 25 percent. If a commercial casino is licensed in the same region, the Mashpee Wampanoag will pay nothing.
