Arnaud Démare (Groupama – FDJ) won Stage 4 of the 103rd Giro d’Italia, 140km from Catania to Villafranca Tirrena. Peter Sagan (Bora – Hansgrohe) and Davide Ballerini (Deceuninck – Quick – Step) finished second and third, respectively.

João Almeida (Deceuninck – Quick – Step) retains the Maglia Rosa and leads the general classification.

Heras won the stage and improved his overall position while Simoni was, for now, up to second in the General Classification and Gotti was the new leader and winner of the 1999 Giro d’Italia. Speaking seconds after the stage finish, the stage winner Arnaud Démare said: “Behind my dad’s scooter I often train for the last jump. Today it paid off but I wasn’t sure that I’d won when I crossed the line. It was so tight. It’s fantastic to have won a Giro stage already in the first days of the race.”
